What is the 20% project
The 20% project is a project that allows individuals to focus 20% of their time on an activity or project of their choosing. Whether it is in the classroom or in the workplace, the 20% project is thought it increase productivity and initiative in individuals. Participants are encouraged to seek out their own topics, create their own timelines, research their own products, and complete them. The advantage of autonomy is that participants do not limit their ideas to a simple list.
Our Project idea: Educational Website
Motivation
In signing up for Medical Terminology, we had only one motive, to learn the content. As future medical physicians, we are inspired to create an interactive website that will allow other students to study the human body in a user-friendly aspect. Content will include anything, and everything that is essential, from the Anatomy & Physiology course. This website will allow us to put our interests and knowledge to use and will hopefully assist others in learning about their own bodies for either self-diagnosis or own personal interest.
Background
The field of medicine is of great importance in society and continues to increase, at a rapid pace. There are hundreds of medical schools in the country and they are extremely selective with whom is accepted. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) there is a projection of nearly 21,041 students enrolled into medical college during the year of 2015-16, which is a 27.4% increase since the year 2002-03. The AAMC also states that there will be an overall 30% increase of medical school enrollment by 2016-17 with an addition of seven schools. Throughout many experiments in learning styles, approximately 65% have been labeled visual learners as opposed to auditory, kinesthetic, etc. Another study shows that approximately 20-30% of the school-aged population learns better with hearing the content, 40% learn better with seeing the content, and the remaining population learn best with hands-on activities. This shows that visual learning is the most abundant learning style and is highly preferred by a majority of people.
Objective
The goal of this website is to assist students learn the systems of the human body. There has been a decline of medical care physicians in the past decade, therefore the need of new recipients is strongly needed. By producing this product, people will be able to acquire the knowledge of medical language and bodily systems in a user-friendly method. This will allow people to gain more interest in the topic and the field of medicine will thrive once more. This product will enhance the learning capacity of the limited applicants within the medical field. By creating this product, interest in the medical field may increase leading to more applicants and later filling the shortage of physicians. This product will include descriptions of the many body systems and their functions, along with applying the true medical language in context.
Plan
The final product of the 20% Project will be a functional website that contains information on the human body and medical language. The final draft of this project is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving and will be executed by Alli Brown and Kameron Delk. We are utilizing Weebly to create a free website that will be composed of accurate information provided through research, reference books, and professionals.
